  1. Choose Your Niche

To stand out among the sea of aspiring podcasters, you need to have a niche.

Your niche is essentially your podcast’s main topic or concept. The more specific your niche is, the easier it will be to target and appeal to a specific group. The result is that your audience will be more engaged with your podcast since your content is tailored to their interests. 

For instance, you can talk about investing tips for 20-year-olds instead of just generic investment advice. Or, instead of just generally talking about fitness, you can specifically provide muscle-building tips for petite women. 

So, how do you find your niche? Consider the following:

Identify your passion or expertise: What topics do you find fun? What topics do you know about? Remember, you’ll need to have a high level of interest or knowledge in a topic to talk about it endlessly. 

Find a unique angle: Once you’ve chosen a topic, see if you can find a unique perspective or angle about it. Let’s say your topic is mental health. You can be more specific and talk about mental health for first responders or mental health for teachers. 

Check the market demand: You may love a topic, but is there a demand for it? You can check Google Trends, SEO keyword tools, trending hashtags, or existing podcasts to see if you have an audience for your content.

Research your audience: Consider the demographics, pain points, interests, and goals of your ideal listener. Knowing all of this can guide you in choosing the right niche.  

  1. Plan Your Podcast 

Now that you have your topic, it’s time to plan your podcast.

You’ll need to decide your format, structure, length, and possible content ideas. Once you have that down, you’ll also need to plan out your frequency and schedule of posting.  

Knowing all of this ahead of time can help you create compelling content for your audience instead of just releasing random content that is disorganized and not engaging. 

Let’s dive into this individually. First, your format. Some commonly used podcast formats are:

Solo podcast: Only one host discusses the topic. This is great if you want to share personal stories, experiences, or opinions. It’s also helpful for your personal branding since your audience will get to know you intimately, and you have full control of the content that will go out. 

Co-hosted podcast: Two or more hosts lead the podcast. This format is great for sparking a lively debate or discussion. 

Interview: In this format, the host/s will interview an expert, celebrity, or individual with a unique or interesting story. Do this if you want to share insights or impart knowledge to your audience. 

Documentary: This podcast deeply delves into real-life stories, issues, or historical events. Think of it as the podcast version of investigative documentary shows. 

Storytelling: This format focuses on telling stories with voice acting, sound effects, or immersive music. If documentaries are non-fiction, storytelling can be based on personal accounts (just dramatized) or a fictional story. 

Remember, you don’t have to stick to one format! You can be a solo podcaster and then interview if you want. 

Next is your structure. This focuses on how you want your podcast episodes to play out. Do you want to be scripted or unscripted? Do you want to start with an intro slogan? Or do you want to start by responding to comments from your previous episode? And so on.  

The length of your podcast also matters. Some are only 15 minutes long, while some can go over 2 hours. It will depend on you and how much you can talk about a certain topic. Some topics are also good in short bursts while educational content is suited for longer shows. But if you want to go with the industry standard, it’s safe to be around 30 minutes long just like 55% of podcasts. 

Next is your content. We suggest brainstorming enough topics for 10 episodes. This should give you an overview of what you need to prepare for the episodes. Let’s say you want to do an interview. Then you’ll have enough time to contact and brief potential guests. Or if you’re doing storytelling, you’ll have time to write your scripts.

Don’t just stick with your real name: Unless you’re a celebrity or known expert, people won’t click on your podcast because it has your name. Think of it this way. If your podcast name is “Today with John Doe”, people will think, “Who is John Doe?”, and move on. Be descriptive: Use words related to your topic so that people can immediately understand what your content is about. Say you have a yoga podcast. Try using words related to it, such as zen, wellness, fitness, mindfulness, or balance. 

Try to spice it up: While being descriptive is good, you don’t need to be so literal. “The Cooking Podcast” will indeed tell you what your topic is about, but it’s a little generic, right? Try to be more witty and creative with your titles. Or add a bit more context to it. For example, “10-minute meals for busy nights” might work better.

Now that you have your name, you can start on your branding materials.

First is your podcast logo. Just like your name, your logo should reflect what your content is all about while also being visually impactful to catch your audience’s eyes.
